BYZANTİNE MEDİCAL ART İN THE SAN SİLVESTRO CHAPEL: LEPROSY

Abstract

This article examines the interrelation between disease, the body, and authority through a comparative analysis of a 13th-century fresco located in the Chapel of San Silvestro, which depicts Emperor Constantine as a leper. In Byzantine iconography, illness is not merely a sign of physical decay; it is a visual manifestation of divine will and moral deterioration. Diseases such as leprosy, especially those that are contagious and visually apparent, were portrayed as bodily expressions of sin, with diagnosis understood not through medical means but as divine judgment. The figure of Constantine, portrayed as a leper, represents not just a sick individual, but a fragile political body subjected to the scrutiny of sacred legitimacy. Thus, the fresco functions not only as a scene of healing, but also as a symbolic reestablishment of imperial sanctity. While analyzing the iconographic details of the scene, this study also interrogates the historical transformation of the notion of healing—from divine intercession to microbiological knowledge. Modern microbiology defines leprosy as an infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, diagnosed through its physical symptoms. In contrast, Byzantine thought associated leprosy with spiritual transgression and social exclusion. The fresco, therefore, presents not only a medical image, but also a theological, political, and cultural narrative. By investigating the fresco through medical, iconographic, and symbolic dimensions, this article aims to reveal how medical knowledge has been represented from past to present, and how the body has been inscribed with ideological meanings across time. In this light, the fresco becomes more than an artwork it becomes a historical text. Frozen on the walls of San Silvestro, this scene speaks across centuries: the body is composed not only of flesh, but also of belief, knowledge, and power. And each mark upon it is not merely a disease but a mirror of its age.

SAN SİLVESTRO ŞAPELİ’NDE BİZANS TIP SANATI: CÜZZAM

Abstract

Bu makale, San Silvestro Şapeli’nde yer alan ve İmparator Konstantin’in cüzzamlı hâlini konu alan 13. yüzyıl freskinden yola çıkarak, hastalık, beden ve otorite arasındaki ilişkiyi Bizans tıp geleneği ile modern mikrobiyolojik söylemler ekseninde karşılaştırmalı biçimde ele almaktadır. Bizans ikonografisinde hastalık, yalnızca bedensel bir çöküşün değil; aynı zamanda Tanrısal iradenin ve ahlaki durumun görsel bir dışavurumudur. Özellikle cüzzam gibi bulaşıcı ve görünür hastalıklar, günahın bedensel formu olarak resmedilmiş; bu hastalıkların tanısı tıbbi değil, ilahi yargının bir sonucu olarak görülmüştür. İncelenen freskte cüzzamlı olarak betimlenen İmparator Konstantin figürü, yalnızca hasta bir bireyi değil; aynı zamanda kırılganlaşmış, ilahi onaya muhtaç bir politik bedeni temsil etmektedir. Bu bağlamda, fresk yalnızca bir iyileşme sahnesi değil, aynı zamanda iktidarın Tanrısal meşruiyetini yeniden tesis etme aracıdır. Çalışma, bu sahnedeki ikonografik detayları tahlil ederken, şifanın kaynağının ilahi şefaatten mikrobiyolojik bilgiye evrildiği tarihsel dönüşümü de sorgulamaktadır. Modern mikrobiyoloji, cüzzamı Mycobacterium leprae adlı patojenle açıklar ve fiziksel belirtiler üzerinden hastalığı teşhis eder. Buna karşın Bizans dünyasında cüzzam, hem bireyin ilahi düzenden sapmasını hem de toplumsal dışlanmayı sembolize eder. Fresk, bu açıdan yalnızca tıbbi değil, aynı zamanda teolojik, politik ve kültürel bir anlatı sunar. Bu makale, söz konusu freski tıbbi, ikonografik ve sembolik boyutlarıyla analiz ederek; geçmişten günümüze tıp bilgisinin nasıl temsilleştiğini ve bedenin hangi ideolojik katmanlarla yüklendiğini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Böylece, tarihsel bir sanat eserinden hareketle, hastalığın yalnızca biyolojik değil; aynı zamanda epistemolojik ve kültürel bir inşa olduğunu göstermektedir. San Silvestro Şapeli'nin duvarlarında donup kalmış bu sahne, zamanın ötesinden bugüne seslenir: Beden yalnızca etten değil, inançtan, bilgiden ve iktidardan örülüdür. Ve her bir leke, yalnızca bir hastalık değil; bir çağın aynasıdır.
