The Ottoman Capital in the Making: The Reconstruction of Constantinople in the Fifteenth Century

Abstract

İstanbul’un fethi, Osmanlı Devleti’nde siyasî ve kültürel alanda pek çok köklü değişikliklere neden olmuştur. Konstantinopol’un Osmanlı Devleti’nin başkenti yapılması yönündeki karar, bir uç beyliğinden yerleşik bir imparatorluğa geçişin en önemli mihenk taşlarından biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Çiğdem Kafescioğlu tarafından hazırlanan “The Ottoman Capital in the Making: The Reconstruction of Constantinople in the Fifteenth Century” başlıklı tez çalışması, fetih sonrasında şehrin yeniden oluşum ve inşa sürecini ele almaktadır. Fetih sonrasındaki 30 yılı konu edinen çalışma bir taraftan devlet eliyle gerçekleştirilen formel şehirleşme sürecini, diğer taraftan da bunun görsel yansımaları olan mimarî yapılar üzerinden şehrin siluetini incelemektedir. Kafescioğlu; yeni fethedilen şehrin yeniden yapılanma sürecini, Doğu Roma başkentini Osmanlı başkentine dönüştüren kapsamlı bir kentsel proje olarak değerlendirmektedir.
