The Social Initiative on Food Loss and Waste

Abstract

Cold war, changes in the balances of power, economic crises, poverty and hunger have been the most important

discussion topics in the new century. Among those, reducing poverty is become one of the main objectives.

According to the international poverty line of one-fifth of the world's population has a daily income of less than 2

US Dollars. Despite progress, the Asia-Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa and in Latin America-Caribbean hunger is

still a major problem. The total number of people suffering hunger in the World is more than the combined

populations of USA, Canada and the European Union. Enough food is produced worldwide to feed all the people

in the World. However, despite this truth, nearly millions people are suffering from chronic hunger today. There

are a wide range of factors that contribute to this problem, but perhaps one of the most significant is poor food

distribution and also food waste. It is estimated that one third of all food produced is wasted from farm to fork.

This waste is equivalent to 5 to 6 year of total food production of Sub-saharan Africa. Whatever the socioeconomic

classification of country, all countries have food loss/waste problem. Large amounts of food is still lost

during the production process in developing countries, however, due to lack of infrastructure and poor

equipment. In developed countries food waste is mostly a big problem at consumption and retail stage. Different

solutions are recommended for these countries; in the developed world, they include consumer awareness

raising and stakeholders partnerships. The developing countries' drivers include raising of farmers education,

improve the infrastructure, and supported better technology.

Gıda Kayıpları, İsraf ve Toplumsal Çabalar

Abstract

Yeni yüzyılın en önemli tartışma konuları soğuk savaş, güç dengelerinin değişmesi, ekonomik krizler ve

yoksulluk, açlık olmuştur. Ve yeni yüzyılda gerçekleştirilmesi gereken temel hedeflerin başında yoksulluğun

azaltılması kayıtlara geçmiştir. Uluslararası yoksulluk sınırına göre dünya nüfusunun hala 1/5'i günde 2

ABD$'nın altında gelirle yaşamaktadır. İyileşmelere rağmen Asya-Pasifik, Sahra Altı Afrikası ve Latin

Amerika-Karaiplerde açlık önemli boyuttadır. Aç nüfus sayısı ABD, Kanada ve AB'nin toplam nüfusuna eşittir.

Dünyada aç nüfusu besleyecek gıda yeterli düzeyde üretilmektedir. Bu gıdaların adil bölüşümünün olmaması ile

birlikte tüm ülkelerde değişen nedenlerle ortaya çıkan gıda savurganlığı da önlenmesi gereken bir sorundur.

Dünyada her yıl üretilen gıdanın1/3'ü (1.3 milyon ton) çeşitli nedenlerle tarladan çatala kaybolmaktadır.

Kaybolan bu gıda Sahra altı Afrika'nın yaklaşık 5-6 yıllık toplam gıda üretimine eşdeğerdir. Sosyo-ekonomik

sınıflandırması ne olursa olsun tüm ülkelerde gıda zincirinde israf/kayıp yaşanmaktadır. Gelişmiş ülkelerde

tüketici, perakendeci düzeyinde yaşanan kayıplar gelişmekte olan ülkelerde hasat ve depolamada

yaşanmaktadır. Ve bu ülkeler için de farklı çözümler söz konusudur. Gelişmiş ülkelerde tüketici

bilinçlendirilmesi ve paydaşların işbirliği; gelişmekte olan ülkelerde üreticinin eğitimi, altyapının

iyileştirilmesi, daha iyi teknoloji kullanımı için üreticinin desteklenmesi önceliklidir.
