Easy to Read Books in Tatar Language Teaching

Abstract

The Easy to Read Tatar project in Finland has resulted in six books which contain an easily readable language, Easy Tatar Language. The books are presently being read by children and youth aged 7 to 16 in the Finnish Islamic Congregation’s Tatar language weekend school in Helsinki. In the classes reading aloud supports not only reading skills but also the listening and reading comprehension. After reading the pupils and the teacher discuss the text and exchange opinions and thoughts about the books. The books are also useful in online education, as they are available in electronic format and can be shared on the computer screen.

The experience of having access to Tatar language books dealing with current topics and situations, which the young readers might encounter in their own lives, triggers in the children a desire to read more. The topic of mobile phones is for instance present in all the six books and it prompts the readers to think about their own phone usage. All the translated books have been well received by the children and teenagers and especially Philip in the tunnel (Tatar: Filip tunnelda) has caught their attention. The Easy Language which is adapted to the level of the young readers and the modern topics contribute to this interest. Through these books the interest and positive attitudes towards the Tatar language have increased among the pupils.
