Determinants of Value-Addition In The Value Chains: Case of Lemon In Mersin, Türkiye

Abstract

When the literature on Value Chain (VC) is examined, it is observed that different terminologies and various approaches are used. In this study, the FAO’s VC approach was adopted, and the analyses were conducted within the framework defined by the FAO. It is important to carry out studies in Türkiye that involve performance-based value chain analysis, particularly for agricultural products. There is a need for value chain analysis and the presentation of quantitative data, especially in this field. This study is the first to conduct a performance-based value chain analysis of lemons. The aim of the study was to carry out a performance-based analysis of the lemon value chain in Mersin, identify the interactions among the actors in the VC, and calculate cost and profit margins. The sample group of the study which was conducted in 2023 consisted of four districts with the highest lemon production in Mersin, Türkiye. From each district, three villages were selected, and from each village, three producers were included (N=36). Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with retailers, wholesalers, and exporters to determine the relationships between the actors. Within this context, four (4) data collection tools (survey forms) were developed using both qualitative and quantitative (mixed research) designs. However, this study focused on the producer segment of the chain. A value chain map was constructed, which revealed that 66.6% of producers preferred exporters, 52.8% preferred commissioners or wholesalers, and 5.5% opted for direct sales channels to market their produce. The marketing activity index of the lemon producers was calculated as 0.85.
