The Relationship Between Defence Styles and Reading Behaviors of Turkish Teacher Candidates

Abstract

This study was carried out to reveal the relationship between the defense styles used by Turkish teacher candidates and their reading behaviours. The defense styles, which are considered to be associated with a person's psychological well-being, were examined under three main headings as mature, immature and neurotic. In order to reveal how do book reading preferences, selected books and frequency of reading books have an influence on this well-being, 107 undergraduate students between the ages of 18-25 studying in the Department of Turkish Language Education were included in the study with the convenience sampling method. The findings obtained from the 9-point Likert-type Defense Styles Test with 40 items and questions about demographic information and book reading habits were discussed with the support of the literature. Findings revealed that only mature defense style had a positive and significant relationship with the frequency of reading books. However, the exploratory analyzes conducted in the study showed that the defense styles did not differ based on the type of the book they preferred. Based on the finding demonstrating that there can be a positive relationship between the efficient use of defense styles and reading frequency regardless of the type of the books, relevant recommendations were made.

Türkçe Öğretmen Adaylarında Savunma Biçimleri ve Kitap Okuma Davranışları Arasındaki İlişki

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Türkçe öğretmen adaylarının kullandığı savunma biçimleri ve kitap okuma davranışları arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Olgun, ilkel ve nevrotik olmak üzere üç ana başlıkta incelenen savunma biçimlerinin; kişinin psikolojik iyi oluşu ile ilişkili olduğu düşünülmektedir. Kitap okuma tercihlerinin, seçilen kitapların ve kitap okuma sıklığının bu iyi oluş üzerinde nasıl bir etkisi olduğunu ortaya koymak için elverişlilik örnekleme yöntemi ile Türkçe öğretmenliği bölümünde okuyan 18-25 yaş arasındaki 107 lisans öğrencisi çalışmaya dâhil edilmiştir. 9’lu Likert tipi 40 maddelik Savunma Biçimleri Testi’nden ve kitap okuma alışkanlıklarına dair sorulardan elde edilen bulgular; alanyazınla desteklenerek tartışılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda, yalnızca olgun savunma biçiminin kitap okuma sıklığı ile pozitif yönde ve anlamlı bir ilişkisi olduğu görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte araştırmada yapılan keşif analizleri, katılımcıların savunma biçimlerinin tercih ettikleri kitap türüne göre farklılık göstermediği yönünde olmuştur. Türü ne olursa olsun kitap okuma sıklığının, genç yetişkinlik döneminde etkin savunma biçimleri ile ilişkili olabileceği bulgusundan yola çıkılarak gerekli önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
