The Investigation of Textbooks as Regards to Scientific Content, Visuals and Learning Outcomes: Example of 12th Grade Science Textbook

Abstract

Textbooks serve as a guiding instructional material for teachers while being a primary source of knowledge for students. They are educational tools that must be meticulously examined in terms of scientific accuracy, the supportive nature of visual materials, and their alignment with learning outcomes and objectives. The study aims to examine one of the 12th-grade biology textbooks used in Türkiye during the 2023–2024 academic year in terms of the appropriateness of its scientific content, visuals, and learning outcomes. A descriptive research model was employed in the study. The document analysis method was utilized to evaluate the textbook's units and visual elements. The findings revealed that the information provided in the topics “From Gene to Protein”, “Energy Transformations in Living Organisms”, and “Plant Biology” contained some scientific errors. Additionally, certain expressions in the textbook were found to potentially lead to misconceptions among students. Furthermore, the textbook's content and assessment activities were evaluated in relation to the learning outcomes specified in the 2018 Biology Curriculum. The findings indicated that the overall content was generally aligned with the specified learning outcomes. This study is expected to contribute to the field by identifying and correcting scientific inaccuracies in the 12th-grade biology textbook, providing valuable insights for educators, students, and the literature.

Ders Kitaplarının Bilimsel İçerik, Görseller ve Kazanımlar Açısından İncelenmesi: 12. Sınıf Biyoloji Kitabı Örneği

Abstract

Ders kitapları, öğretmenler için rehber bir öğretim materyali iken öğrencilerin başlıca bilgi kaynaklarından biridir. Ders kitaplarının bilimsel doğruluğu ve görsellerin destekleyici niteliği, kazanımlara ve öğretim hedeflerine uygunluğu açısından titizlikle incelenmesi gereken eğitim araçlarıdır. Bu bağlamda araştırmada 2023-2024 eğitim-öğretim yılında Türkiye’de okutulan 12. sınıf biyoloji ders kitaplarından biri bilimsel içerik ve görsellerin uygunluğu açısından incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada betimsel model kullanılmıştır. Ünitelerin ve görsellerin değerlendirilmesinde doküman analizi yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda “Genden Proteine” ve “Canlılarda Enerji Dönüşümleri”, “Bitki Biyolojisi” konuları kapsamında verilen bilgilerde bilimsel olarak bazı hatalar olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca araştırmada ders kitabında öğrencilerde kavram yanılgılarına yol açabilecek bazı ifadeler olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte ders kitabının içeriği, ölçme değerlendirme etkinlikleri 2018 yılında yayımlanan Biyoloji Dersi Öğretim Programı’nda yer alan kazanımlara göre değerlendirilmiştir. Buna göre verilen içeriğin kazanımlara göre genel olarak uygun olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmanın 12. sınıf biyoloji ders kitabındaki bilimsel yanlışların belirlenmesi ve bunların düzeltilmesi bağlamlarında alanyazına, öğretmenlere ve öğrencilere katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
