AMERİKAN GÖNÜLLÜ KURULUŞLARI: BARIŞ GÖNÜLLÜLERİNİN DÜNYADA VE TÜRKİYE'DEKİ ÇALIŞMALARI

Abstract

Barış Gönüllüleri Örgütü 1961 yılında kurulmuştur. Barış Gönüllülerinin amacı diğer milletleri yakından tanımak, Amerikalıları diğer milletlere tanıtmak ve gelişmekte olan ülkelere kalkınmaları hususunda becerili işgücü ile yardımcı olmaktır. Barış Gönüllüleri 1962-1970 yılları arasında Türkiye’de bulunmuşlardır. Ülkemize gelen gönüllü sayısı 1201’dir. Barış Gönüllülerinin dörtte birinden fazlası Ankara’da görev yapmıştır. Doğu ve Güneydoğu Anadolu bölgelerine gönderilmeyeceği belirtilmesine rağmen gönüllülerin yaklaşık onda biri bu bölgelere gönderilmiştir. Gelen Barış Gönüllülerinin yüzde 67’si İngilizce öğretiminde, yüzde 14’ü toplum kalkınmasında, yüzde 6’sı ise çocuk bakımı programında çalışmıştır. Bu gönüllülerin ağırlıklı olarak eğitim sektöründe çalıştıkları görülmektedir. Barış Gönüllüleri ülkemizden gideli 36 yıl olmuştur. Ancak yayınları ile ülkemizin ABD’de tanıtımına olumlu veya olumsuz etkileri devam etmektedir. Türkiye’de Barış Gönüllüsü olarak bulunanlar tarafından internet üzerinde www.arkadaslar.info isimli site oluşturulmuştur. Sitenin amacı, Türkiye’de gönüllü olarak bulunan kişileri bir araya toplamaktır. Sitede hatıralar, kitaplar ve fotoğraflar vardır. Bu çalışmada genel olarak, Amerikan gönüllü örgütleri tanıtılmış, barış gönüllülerinin dünyadaki ve Türkiye’deki çalışmalarına yer verilmiştir. Bu tür gönüllü kuruluşların eğitim boyutu incelenmiştir. Ayrıca bu çalışmanın, ülkemizde gönüllü gençlik organizasyonlarının tanıtılmasına ve kurulmasına katkı sağlayacağı umulmaktadır.

AMERICAN VOLUNTARY ORGANIZATIONS: THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PEACE CORPS IN THE WORLD AND IN TURKEY

Abstract

The peace corps organization was founded in 1961. Peace corps have three goals; to meet requests for trained men and women; to promote the understanding of Americans by other people and to promote American understanding of other people. Peace corps have been in Turkey between 1962-1970. The number of peace corps coming to Turkey is 1201. More than one fourth of them worked in Ankara. Approximately one to ten peace corps were sent to the East and the Southeast of Anatolia altough it had been noted that they would not be sent to these regions. 67% of them worked in the program of teaching English, 14% of them worked in the program of public development and 6% of them worked in the program of child care. It can be concluded that these peace corps worked mostly in the education sector. The peace corps left Turkey 36 years before. However, their effects on introducing Turkey to America is continuing both in a good and bad way by their publications. A web site called arkadaslar.info on internet have been created by the peace corps coming to Turkey. It is said that the aim of the site is to gather the peace corps in Turkey together. There are memories, books and photoghraphs of the peace corps on this site. In general, in this study, the American voluntary organizations have been introduced and the activities of the peace corps in the world and in Turkey have been explained. The education aspect of such voluntary organisations has been studied. In addition, it is aimed that this study will contribute to the introduction and foundation of the voluntary youth organisations in Turkey.
