Knowledge and Attitude of The Final Year Medical Students About Rational Antibiotic Useage

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Resistance to antimicrobial agents is an increasing problem worldwide. Irrational use of antibiotics is the major factor that causes antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and behavior about rational antibiotic use of the final year medical students of Ege University (59 student) and Celal Bayar University (18 student) Medical Faculty. METHODS: A questionnaire comprising of 23 questions was given to a total of 77 students. The questions asked for determining the level of knowledge and behavior were prepared as multiple choice questions. RESULTS: The aim of antibiotic use for common cold was 33.8 %. Only 68.4 % of the students said that in order to start antibiotic treatment an infectious diseases necessitating antibiotherapy should exist. The rate of true responses to the questions about the mechanism of antibiotics, antibiotics needed to be adjusted for renal insufficiency and the aim of the antimicrobial combination therapy were 30 %. According to the number of true response of the students 61 % were not found sufficient in terms of rational antibiotic use. CONCLUSIONS: Different educational methods such as patient based learning and vertical integration between preclinical pharmacological lectures and clinical stage in terms of rational antibiotic use should be supported. Postgraduate education programmes also should regularly be carried out.

Tıp Fakültesi Son Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Akılcı Antibiyotik Kullanımı Konusundaki Bilgi ve Davranışları

Abstract

GEREKÇE: Antibiyotiklere karşı direnç gelişiminde tüm dünyada hızlı bir artış görülmektedir. Bunun en önemli sebeplerinin başında da antibiyotiklerin akılcı olmayan kullanımları gelmektedir. Bu çalışmada Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi ile Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi son sınıf öğrencilerinin akılcı antibiyotik kullanımı konusundaki bilgi ve davranışları saptanmak istenmiştir. YÖNTEM: Toplam 23 sorudan oluşan anket 77 son sınıf öğrencisine (59’u Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesinden, 18’i Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesinden) uygulanmıştır. BULGULAR: Öğrencilerin %33.8’inin antibiyotik kullanım amaçları içerisinde nezle ve grip gibi viral enfeksiyonlar olduğu saptanmıştır. Bir antibiyotiğe başlamak için öncelikle antibiyotik kullanmayı gerektirecek bir enfeksiyon hastalığının mevcut olması gerektiğini belirtenlerin oranı %68.4 olmuştur. Antibiyotiklerin etki mekanizmaları, böbrek yetmezliğinde doz ayarlaması gereken antibiyotikler ile kombine antibiyotik kullanım amaçları konusunda doğru yanıt oranları % 30 olarak saptanmıştır. Tıp Fakültesi son sınıf öğrencilerinin toplam 15 soruya verdikleri yanıtlara göre aldıkları puanlara bakıldığında % 61’inin başarılı olma sınırını aşamadıkları görülmüştür. SONUÇ: Tıp Fakültelerinde erken dönemlerde verilen temel antibiyotik ders bilgilerinin, ilerideki dönemlerde kullanılabilir hale dönüşümünün sağlanması için eğitim tekniği olarak olguya dayalı eğitimlerin yanı sıra mezuniyet sonrasında akılcı antibiyotik kullanımı seminerlerinin sürdürülmesinin yararlı olacağı sonucuna varılmıştır.
