Adnan Menderes University Medical Faculty Student’s Profile: Do Medical Faculties Need New Approaches for Selecting Medical Students in Turkey?

Abstract

Background: In Turkey medical students are selected through the Student Selection Examination. Other than this examination which is mainly based on students’ high school performances in science and mathematics courses, there are no determined criteria or application taking into account students’ characteristics. So far this issue has not been properly investigated, this issue has started to be raised in meetings related to medical education. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine medical student’s profile in Adnan Menderes University and to discuss alternative methods for selecting medical students in Turkey. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was administered to all medical students. Data were analyzed using SPSS 11.0 statistical program. Results: The response rate to the anonymous questionnaire concerning the first and second graduates of Adnan Menderes University Medical Faculty was 73%. Medicine as a profession was the first choice of 83% of responders. %64 of these students had independently decided to study medicine. The majority had selected medicine since they were interested in it and considered it as valid profession in Turkey. However, one fourth of them suggested that they selected medical faculty because of family pressure, getting insufficient point to enter their desired faculty or other reasons. While 89 (31%) of the responders mentioned that their enthusiasm and interest in medicine had increased since their entry into medical school, 78 students (28%) said that their feelings remained unchanged. Conclusions: The presence of characteristics necessary for professional practice is not considered during the selection of medical students. The students’ high school performance in science courses should not be the sole selection criterion, other qualities like behavioural and communication abilities, and adequacy in using the maternal language should be observed as well.

ADNAN MENDERES ÜNİVERSİTESİ TIP FAKÜLTESİ ÖĞRENCİ PROFİLİ: TÜRKİYE’DE TIP FAKÜLTELERİNE ÖĞRENCİ SEÇMEDE YENİ YAKLAŞIMLARA GEREKSİNİM VAR MI?

Abstract

Giriş: Ülkemizde tıp fakültelerine öğrenci alımı, Öğrenci Seçme Sınavı ile yapılmaktadır. Öğrencilerin lisedeki fen ve matematik derslerindeki başarılarını esas alan bu sınav dışında, öğrenci özelliklerini dikkate alan belirlenmiş hiçbir ölçüt ve işlem söz konusu değildir. Konu ülkemizde şimdiye kadar pek araştırılmamış, ancak son yıllarda yapılan tıp eğitimi ile ilgili toplantılarda tartışılmaya başlanmıştır. Amaç: Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin profilini çıkararak, tıp fakültesini seçme nedenlerini, buna etki eden etkenleri belirlemek ve alternatif öğrenci seçme ölçütleri oluşturulmasını tartışmaktır. Yöntem ve Gereçler: Amaca yönelik olarak hazırlanan anket fakültemizde eğitim gören tüm öğrencilere elden verildi. Anketler SPSS 11.0 istatistik programında değerlendirildi. Bulgular: İlk mezunlarını 2003-2004 eğitim-öğretim yılında veren fakültemizdeki tüm öğrencileri içeren çalışmada yanıtlama oranı %73 idi. Hekimlik meslek olarak %83’nin ilk tercihiydi. Öğrencilerin %64’ü tıp fakültesi kararını kendileri vermişti. Büyük çoğunluğu hekimliğe ilgi duyduğu ve günümüzün geçerli mesleklerinden biri olduğu için tıp fakültesini seçmişti. Fakat öğrencilerin yaklaşık dörtte biri aile baskısıyla, istediği fakültelere puanı yetmediğinden veya diğer nedenlerden dolayı tıp fakültesini seçmişlerdi. Öğrencilerin çoğunluğu orta sosyoekonomik düzeydeki ailelerden gelmekteydi. Cevap veren öğrencilerin 89’unun (%31) tıp fakültesine girdiklerinden bu yana hekimliğe olan ilgi ve heyecanları artarken 78’inin (%28) duyguları ne olumlu ne de olumsuz yönde değişmemiştir. Sonuç: Tıp Fakültesi öğrencileri mesleğin gereklerine uygun özelliklerinin varlığı dikkate alınarak tıp fakültesine seçilmemektedirler. Tıp fakültesine öğrenci alınırken yalnızca fen bilimlerindeki orta öğrenim başarısının değil, özellikle davranış bilimlerindeki, insan ilişkilerindeki ve kendi dilini kullanmadaki başarının ve buna uygun özelliklerin dikkate alınması gerektiğini düşünüyoruz.
