Abstract This article analyses five samples of adaptation and rewriting in Turkish theatre and deals with the differences between them arguing that the authors of adaptations ignore the underlying idea of the Western source texts but give priority to adapt them into the traditional forms of Turkish theatre while the authors of rewritings aim at improving or renewing the message of the source text.
