The Pursuit Of Happiness That Has Become An Obligatory

Abstract

Happiness has always been one of the most important values for human being. Happiness is not

thought to be achieved only by one’s own efforts in ancient period and themiddle ages. Finding

happiness is also related to the grace of God or to being a bit a lucky. There has been a break on

this issue in the Enlightenment period and thought that all people are entitled to be happy in this world has been emerged and gained wide currency. At this stage, while becoming happy is

perceived as a responsibility that is only allied with human will, happiness has become an obligation.

Although, main subjectivewas initially happiness of all people in this world, this situation

paradoxically resulted in the increase of people’s unhappiness. It is fairly normal for people to

care about their own and others happiness, but hoping that everyone always becomes happy and

considering it as a right and a responsibility inevitably lead to frustration and unhappiness. With

the help of science and technology it is possible to prevent and reduce some sufferings, but it is

not possible to remove ultimately the sufferings from the earth. On the other hand the universe

or God has no duty to make people happy.
