The Transformation of Family Structure in the Post-Modern Era: A Macro Data–Based Analysis

Abstract

This study analyses how the family institution is transforming in the postmodern era by examining demographic trends, household structures and child-related indicators across OECD and EU countries, with special attention to Türkiye. Findings show that traditional patterns of early marriage, stable partnerships and predictable childbearing have been replaced by more individualized and less secure forms of family life. Rising single-person households, cohabitation, non-marital births and single parenthood are especially prominent in Northern and Western Europe. Low fertility and increased social isolation among ageing populations signal deeper structural challenges. Türkiye reflects many of these shifts—such as declining fertility and later marriage—yet maintains strong norms around marriage and intergenerational support. Overall, the study argues that while families are changing significantly, they remain essential, and policies should strengthen caregiving, stability and relational commitment.
