Building Clean Galaxy Samples From SDSS: An Assessment of Galaxy Selection

Abstract

We present an assessment of querying galaxy samples through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database. We performed SQL queries on 26 galaxy cluster fields, which consist of a total of 7437 galaxies. A thorough visual inspection of the samples revealed the inclusion of artifacts, stars, or quasars in our sample. Moreover, there are galaxies that are not reliable in terms of photometry, and such galaxies are included in samples even when queried with the Clean Photometry procedure. In this work, we investigated several SDSS photometry tags and proposed a modified SQL query to obtain more reliable galaxy samples, at least for studies concerning cluster member galaxies. The newly proposed query in this work recovers 338 galaxies that were originally excluded by Clean Photometry and removes an additional 156 objects that are either not real galaxies or not photometrically reliable.
