Determinants of profitability of non-timber forest products: Evidence from African oil bean seed marketing

Abstract

The study identified socio-economic characteristics of African oil bean (AOB) seed marketers; determined the cost and returns of African oil bean (Pentaclethra macrophylla Benth) seed and identified the determinants of net returns from African oil bean seed marketing. A multi-stage sampling was employed and data was collected using structured questionnaires to interview 180 respondents comprising of 139 wholesalers and 41 retailers. Descriptive statistics, marketing margin analysis, net return analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data collected. Results indicated that marketing of African Oil Bean Seed is dominated by females (82.8%) with a mean age of 46.31. The trade was found to be profitable; the gross margin and net farm income were N93,207.61K and N93,515 respectively pefr 134.71kg bag for wholesalers and N98,969.32K and N95,734.97K respectively per 129.88kg bag for the retailers. It was observed from the analysis that the return on investment was indicating that every N 1 invested in the business yielded a net return of N1.62 for wholesalers and N1.66 for retailers. The significant factors which positively affected net returns on the marketing of African Oil Bean Seed were: access to credit, selling price of African Oil Bean Seed and years of marketing experience. The study calls for development and organization of the marketers into groups of cooperatives which will help in improving their marketing network and increase their bargaining power.
