Effects of first thinning treatments on ecophysological characteristics in Anatolian black pine [Pinus nigra ssp. nigra Arn. var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder] stands
Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the suitable thinning intensity and examine the ecophysiological effects in the near-term of intensity of the first thinning in natural Anatolian black pine (Pinus nigra ssp. nigra Arn. var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder) stands. The thinning treatments were applied at 36-40 years old Anatolian black pine natural regeneration with four different thinning intensities (control, very light thinning, moderate thinning, and heavy thinning) and three replications. The mean height, diameter at breast height and midday shoot xylem water potential of Anatolian black pine individuals, and soil properties were evaluated. The research results reveal that thinning treatments were effective on mean diameter at breast height, but not on mean height, soil properties and midday shoot water potentials. The midday shoot xylem water potentials were -1,53 MPa in control, -1,51 MPa in very light thinning, -1,49 MPa in moderate thinning, -1,50 MPa in heavy thinning.
