Volatile compounds of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) leaves and berries

Abstract

Plant volatile oils are used in different industrial areas with scientific and commercial purposes. In this case, plants having volatile compounds have always placed themselves in the center of research. Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) spreads in a very large area and the presence of volatile oil therefore the volatile compounds it has are known. Volatile components of myrtle leaves and berries were determined by solid phase micro extraction (SPME). Totally, 40 components in leaves and 38 components in berries were identified by GC-MS. Limonene 35,13 % in leaves, 40,87 % in berries, α-pinene 26,81 %in leaves, 19,91 % in berries, linalyl acetate 8,88 % in leaves, 7,57% in berries and eucalyptol 4,91 % in leaves 5,68 % in berries were determined as the major compounds. Results compared with different methods of obtaining volatile oils in myrtle leaves and berries gathered from different regions of Turkey.
