COMPASSION FATIGUE AND CARING BEHAVIOURS IN NURSES DURING COVID- 19

Abstract

Aim: To examine the relationship between compassion fatigue and caring behaviors among nurses working on the front line during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 122 nurses working on the front line in a pandemic hospital located in western Türkiye. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale, and the Caring Behaviors Inventory-24. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and Spearman correlation analysis were performed. The robustness of the correlation findings was further evaluated using 95% bootstrap confidence intervals. The study was reported in accordance with the STROBE Statement. Results: The nurses' mean compassion fatigue score was 77.29 ± 24.25, whereas the mean caring behaviors score was 4.69 ± 0.78. Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated a statistically significant weak negative correlation between compassion fatigue and caring behaviors (r = −0.292, p = .001). Spearman correlation analysis confirmed this finding (ρ = −0.288, p = .001). Conclusion: Nurses providing care to COVID-19 patients had above-average compassion fatigue and high caring behavior scores. Compassion fatigue was weakly and negatively associated with caring behaviors, suggesting that compassion fatigue may be associated with caring behaviors to a limited extent. Future intervention studies should examine whether interventions aimed at increasing awareness of or reducing compassion fatigue influence caring behaviors.
