Parent-Infant Book Interaction Scale (PIBIS): A Study on Validity and Reliability

Year 2025, Volume: 39 Issue: 4, 440 - 473, 30.12.2025

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop an original scale to assess parent–infant book interaction by examining parents’ attitudes toward the book-reading process through subdimensions such as reading routines, learning, interaction, book selection, and the creation of a home library.

Method: The study used a quantitative descriptive survey model to develop a scale. Parents of toddlers aged 12-36 months in Turkey participated, with 101 mothers and 4 fathers in the pre-test group, 375 mothers in the second group, and 246 mothers in the third group. After ethical approval, data were collected in baby libraries and online via Google Forms. Participants completed the “Personal Information Form” and “Parent-Baby Book Interaction Scale.” Data analysis involved KMO and Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity, EFA, CFA, Mann-Whitney U Test, and Kruskal-Wallis Variance Analysis.

Findings: The KMO and Bartlett tests were statistically significant. EFA revealed that the scale consists of 18 items and five sub-dimensions. CFA showed high fit indices, confirming construct validity. Additionally, the level of parent-infant book interaction was examined in relation to parental age, the child’s gender and age, parental employment status, income level, number of children, and frequency of library visits.

Implications: The study found the 18-item, 5 5-subdimension Parent-Infant Book Interaction Scale to be a valid and reliable assessment tool. The Parent-Infant Book Interaction Scale encompasses five components: Reading Routine, Learning, Interaction, Selecting Books, and Creating a Library. Analysis revealed that the number of children and library visits had a significant impact on parents' book interactions with infants.

Originality: This study aims to contribute to the field by developing an original scale that examines parent-infant book interaction across the subdimensions of reading routines, learning, interaction, book selection and home library creation.
