Geleneksel Kataloglardan Bilgi Ağlarına: Bilgi ve Belge Yönetiminde Ontolojik Gereklilik
Abstract

From Traditional Catalogs to Knowledge Graphs: The Ontological Necessity in Information and Records Management
Abstract
The field of Library and Information Science (LIS) today is involved not only in the digitization of collections, but also in a datafication process that generates value. However, traditional record-based structures such as MARC fail to make data understandable for machines, even if they succeed in making it machine-readable. This letter to the editor addresses the strategic importance of ontologies in resolving the lack of meaning experienced within the digital information ecosystem. Ontologies transform data from standard cells into machine-reasoning-capable knowledge graphs. This transformation moves information retrieval beyond simple string matching into a process of conceptual discovery that provides users with semantic context. In terms of establishing semantic relationships, the knowledge and skills of IRM professionals regarding information retrieval are of paramount importance for the development of ontologies. While there is a global transition toward models such as BIBFRAME, this letter questions the necessity of establishing a true semantic alignment among library systems in Türkiye. Consequently, emphasizing that IRM is a discipline that inherently produces ontologies, a call is made for information professionals to be positioned as the architects of meaning in the digital age and for professional curricula to be updated in accordance with this semantic depth.
