Tourism from religious, moral and educational perspectives: an academic evaluation

Abstract

This article discusses current evaluations of the ethical, theological, and educational dimensions of contemporary tourism. The ethical and moral aspects of the tourism industry have recently received increasing attention. However, research into the deeper ethical and moral problems inherent in contemporary tourism remains limited. Tourism is also not addressed in the theologies of most established world religions, although different theological elements are emerging in new forms of tourism such as religious tourism, spiritual tourism, faith tourism and halal tourism. The educational dimension is related to faith and cultural tourism, and knowledge acquired through travelling plays a complementary role to formal or lifelong education. The study concludes that the field of tourism has gained some foundations in the ethical and religious contexts. However, it highlights that tourism's relevance within major philosophical currents is limited and largely absent from the theologies of established world religions. The article also examines scholars' critiques and evaluations concerning the religious, ethical, and educational aspects of tourism. The scarcity of dedicated spaces for discussion and exploration of these topics underscores the importance of this research as an attempt to address a significant gap in the field.
