The Effect of Rational Emotive Education Program on High School Students’ Irrational Beliefs and Perceived Problem Solving Skills

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of Rational Emotive Education Program on high school students’ irrational beliefs and perceived problem solving skills. An experimental design with pre-test, post-test and follow-up tests was used in this investigation. The participants who have high level irrational beliefs and low level of problem solving skills appraisal were randomly assigned to experimental, placebo and control groups. ‘Problem Solving Inventory’ and “Irrational Beliefs Scale-Adolescent Form’ were used to collect data. The Rational Emotive Education Program to experimental group and a group guidance program to teach communication and self disclosure skills to placebo group were implemented at the same length. There was not any program application to control group. The post-test measures were collected after 15 days from the end of experiments and follow-up measures were taken three months and one year after the end of the sessions. For data analysis, a two-way Anova technique for Mixed Measures was used. The results of the study demonstrated that the Rational Emotive Education Program was effective in reducing irrational beliefs also in improving perceived problem solving skills of the participants in the expermantal groups.
