Emotional Intelligence and Creativity as Predictors of Life Satisfaction among Gifted Students
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive role of emotional intelligence and creativity levels of secondary grade students on their life satisfaction. This correlational study was conducted with a sample of 225 secondary students (106 female and 119 male) during the 2009-2010 academic year. Data were collected from the participants using the following instruments: “Emotional Intelligence Test Modified EI Scale Turkish Form”, “How creative are you?”, “The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and “Personal Demographic Information Sheet”. The data were examined utilizing the t-test, Pearson correlation, ANOVA and regression analyses. As a result of the analyses, a significant relationship was observed between the emotional intelligence lower dimension and creativity level of students and life satisfaction level (r= 0,38, r2 = 0,15, p<.01). The results also suggested that the creativity level of students had significant predictive value for life satisfaction levels (p< .005) but the correlation among these two variables was strongly negative (t= -2,66). Additional findings of this study were that levels of optimism and expressing feelings from lower dimensions of emotional intelligence scale were significant predictors of life satisfaction level of students (p<.05). These findings also suggest that level of enjoyment of feeling from lower dimensions of emotional intelligence is not significantly related to life satisfaction (p>.05). According to standardized regression coefficient (β), when the order of importance for variables that predict life satisfaction of students are observed, the level of expressing feelings ranks first, optimism ranks second and Creativity ranks third.
