Relational and Personal Predictors of Marital Satisfaction

Abstract

Marital satisfaction is important for sustaining healthy and successful mariage. The purpose of the current study was to examine prediction capasities of nine variables on marital satisfaction : Gender, educational level, number of children, prediction capacity of peer support, years of marriage, age difference between spouses, family income level, sexual life satisfaction and sharing of domestic responsibilities. In order to determine the levels of marital satisfaction of individuals, Marital Life Scale, and to determine level of perceived spousal support, Peer Support Scale and to obtain information on the predictor variables, Personel Information Form were administred in order to gather the data in this study. The sample of the study included totally 811 adults (448 female, 363 male). The data were analyzed by Stepwise Regression technique. Major findings of this study indicated that peer support, sexual life satisfaction and education level significantly predicted marital satisfaction of married individuals. Conversely, gender, the number of children, the duration of marriage, ages difference between spouse, the income level of the family, sharing household duties did not predict marital satisfaction significantly. In conclusion, according to findings perceived spouse support, sexual life satisfaction and education level were predictor variables for the marital satisfaction.

Evlilik Doyumunu Yordayan İlişkisel ve Kişisel Değişkenler

Abstract

Evlilik doyumu, bireylerin evliliklerini sürdürürken tatmin almalarını sağlayan bir süreçtir. Sağlıklı ve başarılı evlilikler yürütebilmek için bireylerin evliliklerinden doyum sağlayabilmeleri önemlidir. Bu nedenle evlilikte önemli bir kavram olan doyum bu çalışmada ele alınmış ve evlilik doyumunu yordayan değişkenler belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı cinsiyet, eğitim düzeyi, çocuk sayısı, eş desteği, evlilik süresi, eşler arasındaki yaş farkı, ailenin gelir düzeyi, cinsel yaşam memnuniyeti ve ev içi sorumlulukların paylaşımı değişkenlerinin evlilik doyum düzeyini ne derecede yordadığını bulmaktır. Araştırmaya Ankara ilinde ikamet eden ve gönüllü olarak katılmak isteyen bireyler dahil olmuştur. Araştırmaya 448 (% 54) kadın ve 363 (% 46) erkek olmak üzere toplam 811 evli birey çalışma grubu olarak alınmıştır. Veri toplama araçları olarak, bireylerin evlilik doyum düzeylerini belirleyebilmek için Evlilik Yaşam Ölçeği, algılan eş destek düzeyini belirleyebilmek için Eş Destek Ölçeği ile yordayıcı değişkenlere ilişkin bilgi elde etmek için de araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilmiş olan Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. Veriler, Aşamalı Regresyon tekniği ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre; eş desteği, cinsel yaşam memnuniyeti ve eğitim düzeyi değişkenleri evlilik doyumunu manidar olarak yordamaktadır. Buna karşın; cinsiyet, çocuk sayısı, evlilik süresi, eşler arasındaki yaş farkı, ailenin gelir düzeyi, ve ev içi sorumlulukların paylaşımı değişkenlerinin evlilik doyumunu manidar olarak yordamadığı bulunmuştur. Sonuç olarak; bulgulara göre bireylerin evlilik doyumlarını; algıladıkları eş desteği, cinsel yaşam memnuniyeti ve eğitim düzeyleri yordamaktadır.
