Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of primary school principals about school guidance services. The participants were the principals of 19 primary schools having a counselor who has been working permanently for at least one year. A semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers was used to gather data. In the framework of the relevant literature, six themes named as educational guidance, personal-social guidance, vocational guidance, school management, teacher, and parents under three categories entitled as continuing studies, evaluations, and suggestions were determined. According to results, school principals reported that efforts of educational guidance were mostly focused on the informative seminars related to improving student academic achievement. In personal-social guidance endeavors, it was reported that test applications were given more importance. Participants also stated that studies aimed at introducing high schools by means of trips were mostly done in the scope of vocational guidance. Related to the studies on school management, participants expressed that there was a strong cooperation in the application of school counseling and guidance program. In teacher theme, results indicated that school guidance plans and programs have been prepared cooperatively. Participants mentioned that several informative seminars were designed for parents. Consequently, results revealed that majority of the participants found these studies related to school guidance services necessary and successful. In addition, several suggestions made by participants regarding to the issues mentioned above are also included.
