Advocacy: Responsibilities of the Field of Counseling Beyond the Individual Client

Abstract

The field of counseling could not come about without the advocacy efforts of its pioneering members. Likewise, counselors advocated for the profession and for their clients through the history of the profession. However, such efforts were not recognized as integral parts of counselors’ professional identity. Also, it was not until recent decades that the profession paid attention to the contexts in which clients’ lives took place. The American Counseling Association launched advocacy competencies in 2003 and the Journal of Counseling and Development allocated its Summer 2009 issue to advocacy. The purpose of this paper was to introduce counselors in Turkey with the concept and competencies of advocacy. Historical factors which contributed to the evolution of advocacy were introduced. The ACA advocacy competencies and their implications for Turkish counselors were discussed.
