Turkey’s Cross-Border Operations and Discourse on PKK’s Propaganda Publications: Sexwebun Case (1992-2022)
Abstract
It is seen that the PKK terrorist organization has achieved various gains since 1978, the year it was founded. One of these gains is the propaganda capacity of the terrorist organization. Today, although the propaganda activities of terrorist organizations are carried out through social media, traditional methods still continue. It is seen that newspapers, magazines, brochures and television broadcasts are used by terrorist organizations. The publication of the magazine Serxwebun (Independence), which has been published by the PKK since 1982, shows the importance that the PKK attaches to organizational print media resources. In this study, cross-border counter-terrorism operations and the effects of terrorist organizations' propaganda strategies, Turkey's cross-border counter-terrorism operations and the transformations in PKK's propaganda publications are tried to be explained in the example of Serxwebun newspaper. In this context, the Hakurk Operation, Steel Operation, Hammer Operation, Operation Dawn, in the 1990’s and the Sun Operation, Claw Operations, Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch and Peace Spring Operations in the 2000s; the effects of the PKK's propaganda discourse during operations, continuities, patterns and differences are discussed in a methodological context in line with the data obtained from the publications of the organizational Serxwebun newspaper in the relevant processes.
