ASSESSMENT OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS SKILLS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

Abstract

The purpose of the current study is to evaluate preschoolers’ Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills. In line with this purpose, reliability and validity examination of the C-PALLS+STEM Science, Technology, and Engineering Scale (STE) and Mathematics Scales (MS). A total of 279 preschoolers (138 girls and 141 boys) aged 48-74 months (M= 58,49, Ss= 8,37) in Central District of Edirne participated in the study. Demographics Form and adapted versions of the Science, Technology and Engineering /STE) and Mathematics skills (MS) measures were used. The scales were adapted to Turkish in terms of language and cultural perspectives. The validity of scales was examined through Confirmatory Factor Analysis and distinction between Upper and Lower 27% of Groups. McDonald’s Omega was used to assess the internal reliability of the scales. Internal consistency for STES and MS were ω = .83 and ω = .92, respectively. Based on the results of the current study, it would be said that both scales could be used with preschool-aged children.

ERKEN ÇOCUKLUK DÖNEMİNDE BİLİM, TEKNOLOJİ, MÜHENDİSLİK VE MATEMATİK BECERİLERİNİN ÖLÇÜLMESİ

Öz

Araştırmada, okul öncesi eğitime devam eden çocukların bilim, teknoloji, mühendislik (BTM) ve Matematik becerilerinin ölçülmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla, C-PALLS+STEM ölçme aracının Bilim, Teknoloji ve Mühendislik Ölçeği ile Matematik Ölçeğinin geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışması yapılmıştır. Nicel araştırma yöntemiyle tasarlanan araştırmaya Edirne İli Merkez İlçe’sinde yer alan ve okul öncesi eğitime devam eden 48-74 aylık (M= 58,49, SS= 8.37) 279 çocuk katılmıştır. Bu çocuklardan 138’i kız, 141’i erkektir. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak, genel bilgi formu ve Bilim, Teknoloji ve Mühendislik (BTM) ile Matematik Becerilerinin (MB) ölçülmesi için uyarlaması yapılan iki ölçek kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada öncelikle her iki ölçeğin dil ve kültürel açıdan Türkçe’ye uyarlanması yapılmıştır. Her iki ölçeğin geçerliği Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi, alt-üst %27 lik grup puan farklarıyla ölçülmüştür. Ölçeklerin iç güvenirliği McDonald’s Omega (ω yöntemi ile hesaplanmıştır. Araştırmada, BTM iç tutarlılık değeri ω = .83 ve Matematik iç tutarlılık değeri ise ω = .92 olarak bulunmuştur. Araştırma bulgularına göre her iki ölçeğin de okul öncesi döneme devam eden çocuklar ile kullanılabileceği söylenebilir.
