Cruise Ports in Turkey: Analysis of Market Structure and Competitiveness

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the market structure and competitiveness levels of cruise port sector in Turkey. In this context, initially, the cruise tourist movement for the period of 2003-2017 is presented. For the specified time span, “Concentration Analysis (CR₃-CR₅)” and “Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI)” are used to comprehend the market structure. Then, the competitiveness of regions and cruise ports is analyzed using “Shift-Share Analysis” for 2003-2007, 2008-2012 and 2013-2017 time periods. According to the findings, although the cruise port sector in Turkey has oligopolistic market structure, it has been observed that the competition pressure has increased in recent years. Especially, Çeşme and Bodrum regions are found as rising stars in spite of sharp decline in 2016 and 2017.

Türkiye’de Kruvaziyer Limanlar: Pazar Yapısı ve Rekabetçilik Analizi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’deki kruvaziyer limancılık sektörü pazar yapısının ve rekabetçilik düzeylerinin analizi amaçlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda öncelikle 2003-2017 yılları arasındaki kruvaziyer yolcu hareketlerine verilmiştir. Söz konusu zaman aralığına yönelik olarak “Yoğunlaşma Oranı (CR₃-CR₅)" ve “Herfindahl-Hirschman Endeksi (HHI)” yoğunlaşma analizleri uygulanarak sektörün pazar yapısı anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Ardından, 2003-2007, 2008-2012 ve 2013-2017 dönemlerini kapsayacak şekilde üç ayrı zaman aralığına göre Türkiye’deki kruvaziyer bölgelerinin ve limanlarının rekabetçilik düzeyleri, Pay-Değişim Etkisi (Shift-Share Analysis) yöntemi ile incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, Türkiye’deki kruvaziyer limancılık sektörünün oligopol pazar yapısına sahip olmasına rağmen, özellikle son yıllarda rekabet baskısının arttığı gözlenmiştir. Özellikle 2016 ve 2017 yıllarında Türk limanlarını ziyaret eden kruvaziyer turist sayısındaki dramatik azalmaya rağmen Çeşme ve Bodrum bölgelerinin, parlayan yıldız olarak beklenenin üzerinde kruvaziyer turisti ağırladığı saptanmıştır.
