The Rüşdiye and İbtidai Schools of Cisr-i Ergene (Uzunköprü) District (1876-1914)

The 19th century was a period of profound transformation and modernization in the Ottoman Empire. The reflections of these changes are seen in many fields such as in political, economic, military, and social spheres. Inevitably, radical changes were implemented in the field of education, which held a significant place in social life. Until the Tanzimat Edict, education in Ottoman institutions was primarily religious and traditional in nature; however, with the edict, efforts were made to modernize the education system. In line with this approach, schools were opened nationwide to provide education in the new method. In this study, the rüşdiye and ibtidai schools in Cisr-i Ergene (Uzunköprü) established between 1876 and 1914 to provide modern education, similar to those in nearly all other sancaks (districts) and kazas (sub-districts) of the Ottoman Empire, are examined. Issues such as the establishment of the schools, the status of the teachers working in these schools, their salaries and tenure, the student enrollment numbers, the grades they received from the courses, and the courses taught in the schools were evaluated in the light of archival documents. In the preparation of the study, the documents in various classifications in the Ottoman Archives of the Presidential State Archives Directorate, Edirne salnames (provincial yearbooks), Ministry of Education salnames (yearbooks) and relevant scholarly works, were used.

XIX. Yüzyıl, Osmanlı Devleti’nde birçok değişimin ve yenileşmenin yaşandığı yüzyıldır. Siyasi, ekonomik, askeri, sosyal gibi pek çok alanda bu değişimin yansımaları görülmektedir. Hiç şüphesiz toplum hayatında önemli yeri olan eğitim alanında da köklü değişiklerin yapılması kaçınılmazdır. Tanzimat Fermanı’na kadar Osmanlı eğitim kurumlarında dini ve geleneksel tarzda yapılan eğitim, fermanla birlikte modern bir kimliğe kavuşturulmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda bütün ülke genelinde yeni usulde eğitim verecek okullar açılmıştır. Bu çalışmada 1876-1914 yılları arasında, Osmanlı Devleti’nin hemen hemen diğer bütün sancak veya kazalarında olduğu gibi Cisr-i Ergene (Uzunköprü) kazasında da modern eğitim verilmesi amacıyla açılan rüşdiye ve ibtidai mektepleri ele alınmıştır. Rüşdiye ve diğer mekteplerin açılışı, bu mekteplerde görev yapan muallimlerin durumları, aldıkları maaşlar, görev süreleri, öğrencilerin sayıları, derslerden aldıkları notlar, mekteplerde okutulan dersler gibi konular arşiv vesikaları ışığında değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın hazırlanmasında başta Cumhurbaşkanlığı Devlet Arşivleri Başkanlığı Osmanlı Arşivinde çeşitli tasniflerde yer alan belgeler ile Edirne vilayet salnameleri, maarif nezareti salnameleri ve konuyla ilgili araştırma eserlerinden faydalanılmıştır.
