The Construction of Ethical Life Through the Dionysian Leap in Ferit Edgü’s Story “Yitik Gün”

Abstract

This study argues that Ahmet Hırçın’s suicide in Ferit Edgü’s short story “Yitik Gün”, which contains surreal elements, should not be interpreted as a failure, contrary to existing literature, but rather as a transitional phase toward ethical existence in the Kierkegaardian sense. The analysis first examines Hırçın’s suicide from a Nietzschean perspective, focusing on the opposition between the Apollonian and Dionysian principles. In this context, Hırçın’s inability to conform to the symbolic order demanded by Apollonian culture is explored through the framework of Dionysian ecstasy. It is asserted that the conflict between Apollonian and Dionysian elements results in a creative destruction, as Hırçın’s act of self-annihilation represents an attempt to detach himself from all identities and statuses imposed by the symbolic order. The story, which is also analyzed through Durkheim’s theory of suicide, briefly incorporates Ferit Edgü’s approach to nature alongside Rousseau’s views. The discussion then draws upon the distinction between acting out and passage à l’acte in psychoanalysis, suggesting that Hırçın’s suicide can be interpreted as passage à l’acte since his act signifies an attempt to escape the rigid reality of the symbolic order and to erase himself within the Other. Having transcended all signifiers, Hırçın assumes responsibility through the act of suicide, detaching himself from imposed identities and statuses, which is interpreted as an entry into the domain of good faith in the Sartrean sense. Indeed, given that human reality is discovered through a confrontation with nothingness, Hırçın’s suicide is examined as an integral part of the process of subjectivation. In this regard, the surreal narrative element of Hırçın continuing to exist after death is analyzed through the concept of ethical existence in Kierkegaardian philosophy. His departure from an aesthetic life dominated by despair through an imaginary suicide is posited as a decisive act of self-selection, marking his transition into ethical existence within the realm of freedom. Ultimately, this study offers an alternative reading of “Yitik Gün” by evaluating the story through the lens of Dionysian elements and Kierkegaardian ethical existence, challenging the dominant interpretations in the existing literature.
