Repetitions in the Bābur Divan in Terms of Stylistics

Abstract

Rooted in rhetoric and examined in the context of eloquence in the East and rhetoric in the West, stylistics has established itself as an independent scientific discipline only after the 20th century. The principles of stylistics are utilized in analyzing and interpreting literary works by examining the linguistic structures that constitute their internal composition through various theoretical frameworks. Particularly, poetic language due to its concise and figurative expression as well as its melodic harmony has been one of the primary subjects of interest for linguistics and its related disciplines. One such discipline, stylistics, approaches texts holistically from the perspectives of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Although Divan poetry and stylistics differ in their fields of study and methodologies, they share a common analytical ground in the examination of poetic language. There is a parallel between the elements of harmony in Divan poetry and the principles of stylistics, such as parallelism, repetition, foregrounding, and deviation. In this study, the repetitions in the Divan of the Chagatai Turkish poet-ruler Babur Shah have been classified and analyzed from phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and textual perspectives. The analysis reveals that Babur employed different types of repetition in his poetry, aligning with the aesthetic goals and principles of classical literature. Through this, he ensured the harmony of his poems and established the fundamental structure of his artistic style.
