Abstract

A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SERIES “ADOLESCENCE” IN THE CONTEXT OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA AND PEER BULLYING

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between social media experiences of adolescents and peer bullying in the digital age from a sociological perspective. The study employs content analysis to examine the four-episode mini-series “Adolescence”, focusing on character interactions, uses of social media, and scenes involving bullying, all analyzed through a pre-determined thematic framework. The study addresses the following themes: types of bullying, the psychological and social consequences of bullying, the role of social media in these processes, the influence of family communication, and the dynamics among perpetrators, victims, and bystanders. The findings indicate that children and adolescents reinforce real-life bullying behaviors through social media platforms. Moreover, the use of emojis, comments, and symbols on these platforms creates a communicative code that renders bullying either normalized or invisible, contributing to the construction of an informal subculture among youth in digital spaces. The analysis reveals that social media not only makes bullying more visible but also functions as an accelerator and amplifier of these behaviors. Furthermore, it is observed that families and educational institutions often lack the awareness and intervention capacity to address these dynamics effectively. In this regard, the study offers significant insights into understanding bullying practices in adolescence within the context of digital media and aims to contribute to broader societal awareness.
