Relationship Between Hip and Knee Isokinetic Strength and Upper Extremity Function in Female Volleyball Players

Abstract

This study purposed to investigate the association between hip and knee flexor–extensor isokinetic muscle strength and upper-extremity functional performance in female volleyball players. This cross-sectional study included 45 female volleyball players aged 14–33 years from the XXXX Women’s Volleyball Sports Club. Isokinetic muscle strength of the knee and hip flexors and extensors was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer (CSMI HUMAC NORM Testing and Rehabilitation System). Upper-extremity functional performance was evaluated using the Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test (CKCUEST), Medicine Ball Throw Test (MBTT), and Upper Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT). Anaerobic power was assessed using the Vertical Jump Test and calculated using the Lewis formula. Associations between variables were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation analysis, with p<0.05 considered statistically significant. CKCUEST performance was positively correlated with quadriceps femoris isokinetic peak torque at 60°/s (ρ = 0.371, p = 0.012). MBTT performance showed significant positive correlations with quadriceps femoris and hamstring isokinetic peak torque at both 60°/s and 180°/s, and with gluteus maximus and hip flexor peak torque at 180°/s (p<0.05). No significant association was observed between YBT performance and isokinetic muscle strength at either angular velocity (p>0.05). Anaerobic power was positively correlated with quadriceps femoris and hamstring isokinetic peak torque at both angular velocities, as well as with gluteus maximus and hip flexor peak torque at 180°/s (p<0.05). Selected hip and knee isokinetic muscle strength parameters were associated with upper-extremity functional performance in female volleyball players. These findings suggest that lower-extremity muscle strength may be associated with certain components of upper-extremity functional performance. Further studies with larger and more homogeneous samples are needed to confirm these associations.
