“An Examination of Sports Sciences Faculty Students’ Metaverse Knowledge Levels and Their Awareness of Artificial Intelligence in Electronic Leisure Time”
Abstract
Abstract
This study aims to examine the Metaverse knowledge levels and electronic leisure-time artificial intelligence (AI) awareness of students in the Faculty of Sports Sciences in relation to various demographic variables. The research was conducted with 273 undergraduate students from Kafkas University Sarıkamış Faculty of Sports Sciences and employed a descriptive survey model. Data were collected using the Metaverse Scale developed by Süleymanoğulları et al. (2022) and the Electronic Leisure-Time AI Awareness Scale developed by Türkmen and Munusturlar (2022).
The findings revealed that gender did not create a statistically significant difference in either scale. However, significant differences were observed based on grade level, with first-year students showing lower levels of Metaverse knowledge and AI awareness compared to upper-year students. Variables such as active sports participation, being a licensed athlete, and mother’s educational background also showed significant differences in some dimensions. Specifically, individuals who did not participate in sports actively and were not licensed athletes exhibited higher levels of awareness regarding both Metaverse and AI.
The results indicate that digital technology awareness and knowledge are shaped not only by individual interest but also by class level, engagement in sports, family education, and socio-cultural background. In this context, it is recommended that digital literacy be enhanced especially in early years of study, and that more technology-focused educational content be provided to students actively involved in sports.
