Comparison of Jump Performance and Lower-Limb Strength by Playing Position in Soccer Players

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in jumping ability and lower extremity strength based on the playing positions of soccer players. A total of 27 healthy male soccer players from Denizlispor Soccer Club participated in the study (age: 20±3,74 years, height: 181,22±11,12 cm, weight: 67,78±13,97 kg). The players were classified into four different positions: goalkeepers (n=4), defenders (n=9), midfielders (n=12), and forwards (n=2). The lower extremity strength of the participants was assessed using the 6-Repetition Maximum (6RM) Leg Press and 6RM Squat tests, while their jumping performance was measured through the Squat Jump (SJ), Countermovement Jump (CMJ), and Horizontal Jump (HJ) tests. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post-hoc tests were applied for data analysis. The results indicated that forwards and midfielders exhibited significantly higher lower-body strength and jumping performance compared to goalkeepers and defenders (p<0.05). Specifically, forwards achieved the best results in horizontal jump distance. Goalkeepers demonstrated the lowest performance across all strength and jumping tests. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating position-specific physical demands into training programs. In conclusion, it is recommended that coaches develop specialized strength and jump training programs tailored to the playing positions of soccer players.
