The Effect of Internal Migration on Child Mental Health and Social Work Intervention

Abstract

Migration is a fact that usually includes not only a geographical activity, but also a transition from one social environment to another. This aspect of migration mostly causes individuals to come across with some adjustment problems in their new society and as a consequence, some severe or temporary mental health problems may arise. Children, who can be regarded as involuntary migrants, are an at-risk population in this manner. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of migration on the mental health of children and the factors associated with their mental health status. The sample consists of seventy-six migrant and seventy-eight non-migrant 8-to-12 year-old children living in the city of Antalya. Data are gathered from mothers of migrant and non-migrant children during face-to-face interviews. According to the results of Hacettepe Mental Adjustment Scale, which is used to determine the mental health status, the mental maladjustment among migrant children is 28% and differs significantly from their non-migrant peers (p<0.05). The most significant variables associated with their mental health status are defined as the satisfaction of the family about the migration, social support the family has and the negative life events that the child experienced. From this perspective, the research emphasizes the importance of dealing with multi-level systems of the child, which affect his/he, mental well-being, along with the factors associated with the migration process.

İÇ GÖÇÜN ÇOCUK RUH SAĞLIĞINA ETKİSİ VE SOSYAL HİZMET MÜDAHALESİ

Abstract

Göç, yer değiştirmenin ötesinde, bir sosyal çevreden diğerine geçişi de ifade eden bir olgudur. Göçün bu yönü bireyleri çoğunlukla yeni yerleşilen toplumda uyum güçlükleri ile karşı karşıya bırakmakta ve geçici ya da kalıcı ruhsal sorunlara neden olabilmektedir. Göç kararında etkili olmamalarından dolayı istemsiz göç ettiği varsayılabilecek çocuklar, bu açıdan riskli konumdadır. Bu çalışmada, göçün çocuk ruh sağlığı üzerindeki etkisi ve göç yaşayan çocukların ruhsal durumlarını etkileyen etmenler araştırılmıştır. Antalya ilinde gerçekleştirilen araştırmanın örneklemini 8-12 yaşları arasında, 76 iç göç yaşamış ve 78 iç göç yaşamamış çocuk oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri, göç yaşamış ve yaşamamış çocukların anneleri ile gerçekleştirilen yüz yüze görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmıştır. Uygulanan Hacettepe Ruhsal Uyum Ölçeği sonuçlarına göre, göç yaşayan çocuklarda ruhsal uyumsuzluk %28’dir ve göç yaşamamış gruptan anlamlı olarak fazladır (p<0.05). Göç yaşayan çocukların ruhsal uyumuna etki eden değişkenler arasında ailenin göçten memnun olma durumu, ailenin sosyal destek durumu ve çocuğun olumsuz bir yaşam olayı geçirme durumu öne çıkmaktadır. Bu açıdan araştırma, göçün kendisinin yanı sıra, çocuğun ruh sağlığını etkileyen farklı düzeylerdeki sistemler ile çalışmanın önemine vurgu yapmaktadır.
