Robert J. Braidwood was born in Detroit, Michigan, on 29 July 1907. He first studied architecture at the University of Michigan before studying ancient history and anthropology at Michigan and at the University of Chicago. He received his M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1933 and between 1933 and 1938 he participated in the Oriental Institute's excavations in Syria. In 1937 he married his wife Linda.
Born on 9 October 1909 in Grand Rapids, Michigan Linda Braidwood, studied at the Universities of Michigan and Munich between 1927 and 1931. She received her B.A. in 1932 from the University of Michigan. In 1937 and 1938 she participated in the Oriental Institute's research in Syria. During this period she married Robert J. Braidwood.
