The use of steam engines in the navy, industry and railways in the Industrial Revolution increased the need for steam power and its most important fuel source, coal. During the Ottoman period, especially during the war, the problems arising from the foreign dependency in coal supply started the search for coal in the country. Mining coal was discovered in the Zonguldak region in the first half of the 19th century, in the second half of the same century production, transportation and operation activities of mining coal were started. The transportation of coal by railway continued to develop in the first half of the 20th century. In the Zonguldak Mining Coal Basin, railways were built in a piecemeal manner independently of each other during the Ottoman period, and holistic planning was carried out during the Early Republican period. In the research, railway construction activities in the Ottoman and Early Republican periods and the technical progress in this area were conveyed through Havza. In addition, in the Kozlu region, where the first railway activities were carried out in the Havza, the railway structure of both periods was examined through the railway line and the surrounding structures. Furthermore, the difference between piecemeal and holistic planning was revealed and the components constituting the railway heritage were tried to be transferred.

Endüstri Devrimi’nde buharlı makinelerin donanmada, sanayide ve demiryollarında kullanılması, buhar gücüne ve onun en önemli yakıt kaynağı olan maden kömürüne olan ihtiyacı artırmıştır. Osmanlı döneminde özellikle savaş sırasında kömür tedarikinde yaşanılan dışa bağımlılıktan kaynaklı sorunlar, ülkede kömür arama çalışmalarını başlatmıştır. Maden kömürü 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısında Zonguldak bölgesinde keşfedilmiş, aynı yüzyılın ikinci yarısında ise maden kömürünün üretim, nakliyat ve işletme faaliyetlerine başlanmıştır. Kömürün demiryolu üzerinden taşınması, 20. yüzyılın ilk yarısında da gelişerek devam etmiştir. Zonguldak Maden Kömürü Havzası’nda Osmanlı döneminde demiryolları birbirinden bağımsız olarak parçacıl şekilde inşa edilmiş, Erken Cumhuriyet döneminde ise bütüncül bir planlama gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada Osmanlı ve Erken Cumhuriyet dönemi demiryolu inşa faaliyetleri ve bu alandaki teknik ilerleyiş Havza üzerinden aktarılmıştır. Ayrıca Havza’da ilk demiryolu faaliyetlerinin gerçekleştirildiği Kozlu bölgesinde her iki döneme ait demiryolu yapılanması, demiryolu hattı ve çevresindeki yapılar üzerinden incelenmiş olup parçacıl ve bütüncül planlama arasındaki fark ortaya koyularak demiryolu mirasını oluşturan bileşenler aktarılmaya çalışılmıştır.
