Abstract
Târih, beşerî mâʻrifetler arasında mevkiʻini henüz vuzûh ile almamıştır.
Bir zamanlar ilimlerin teşrîfatı, haysiyeti, birbirine nazaran kıdem ve
ehliyeti vardı. Târih bu mertebeler arasında kendisine pek kıymetli bir mevkiʻ
ayırmıştı. Kâʼinatın bütün sırlarının miftâhı onun elinde idi. Beşerin bütün
felâket ve saʻâdetlerinin sebebini bilir, azîmet ve ikbâllerini, husûf ve
inhizâmlarını îzâh eder, karanlıklarıyla bize esrarlı kuytu gecelerin hayâlini
veren mâzîyi bir şûʻlesiyle aydınlatır, bize hayâlî şahrahlar gösterir. Ahlâk,
vicdân, fazîlet biʼl-hassa vatanperverlik onun şûʻlesiyle rûhlarımızda uyanır.
Milletlerin rûhunu bilir ve en sonra o bir cihan mahkemesidir, zâlimleri
muhâkeme ve târih huzûrunda onları mahkûm eder. Mazlûmlara, biʼl-hassa zavallı
maktûllere fazla acır. Bu sûretle mâzî anlaşıldıktan sonra istikbâl gayet
kolaydır. Ve mâzîden istikbâle bir istikrâ bize, biʼl-hassa memleketi idâre
edenlere, en kuvvetli bir tefekkür iksiri olur. Ve bâʻzan daha cürʼetle târih
bugünkü veya gelecek nesillere yol göstermekle iktifâ etmeyip mâzîdeki
kahramanlara da nasîhat verir.
