Extending
from the 1450s to the 1750s Early Modern Europe was an important period during
which many significant events and developments such as Renaissance, the
Discoveries, Reform, the Thirty-Year Wars, the rise of absolute monarchies
and/or constitutional monarchies took place. Due to some developments such as
Renaissance and the Discoveries, Early Modern Era was also an important time
period not only in Europe but also in many other regions of the World. Because
of this, it has become a subject of many scholarly studies in the West. But
neither in Turkey nor in the West, has Early Modern Europe in films appeared to
be a subject of any scholarly study. This article, based on the analysis of
some movies such as Agony and Ecstasy (1965), 1492: The Conquest of Paradise
(1992), Luther (2003), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Cromwell (1970), Queen
Elizabeth (1998), Elizabeth: Golden Age (2007), La Reine Margot (1994) and The
Three Musketeers (1993), aims to examine how some historical events were
described in movies. It also seeks to show whether or not films can be used a
material of history teaching.
