This article
aims to overview major historiographical developments in France of the last two
centuries. Especially focusing on the so-called Annales school, I intend to
deal with social and academic context of this production and evaluate its
recent trends and repositionnements. Even if today Annales-type history writing
is practiced in a lesser extent in France, because of some recent approaches
and trends such as the linguistic-turn, post-colonial studies, Global and
Connected-History etc., the famous “school” which grosso modo dominated the
continental historiography still continues to influence historians. One must as
well think in reflective manner about historiographical operations while doing
history and revision of major schools” helps to to conceive better these
operations that one consciously or not put in place in his/her assumptions and
writings in general.
