In Ukrainian schools, history lessons are
given between 5-11th classes. These courses are taught as two
separate courses: The Ukrainian History and The World History. In this study,
information about the Turks in the textbooks and the Turkish image, which are
likely to occur on the students, were revealed. In the study, the current
textbooks of both of these history courses of all classes have been reviewed and
some of the books were obtained directly from the relevant country, while
others were obtained from the official website of the Ministry of Education.
The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and the samples were presented
directly. Although the curriculum is the same, it has been noticed that there
were different approaches among the writers of the books. Therefore, the
textbooks with different writers have been studied.
In these books, there is
plenty of information about Turks in visual, written, and map forms. It is
observed that most of these visuals were chosen to create a negative image
about Turks such as the captured little boy and the bloody Ottoman sultan.
Although it is seen that some subjects are written with a relatively objective
approach in the textbooks, in which Ottoman history is explained in more
detail, it is possible to say that they approach the Turkish History in a
negative and prejudiced way.
Ukrayna
