Press Geography in Türkiye: Mapping the Distribution of Press Organizations by City

Abstract

This study examines the spatial distribution of press organizations in Türkiye within the framework of physical and human geography, socioeconomic and cultural variables, and proposes the concept of “press geography” as an interdisciplinary theoretical approach. In the study, data on printed publications that received official announcements from the Press Announcement Institution between January 2018 and August 2024 were evaluated using document analysis, and the findings were mapped in ArcGIS and interpreted through descriptive analysis. The analyses show that the geographical distribution of press organizations across Türkiye is shaped not only by physical factors but also by human factors, including economic development levels, cultural structures, and city-level demographic density. It was noted that press operations are primarily concentrated in major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Adana, whereas they are restricted in some provinces in the Eastern Anatolia and Black Sea regions. Analyses of content topics and publication dates of print content have provided a solid foundation for the existing structure of press geography in Türkiye. The results indicate that the spatial arrangement of press institutions is influenced by the convergence of contemporary geographical factors, social dynamics, and economic frameworks, all of which are interwoven with historical context.
