The aim of this article is to study the semantics of the word varoş (of Hungarian origin) in Turkish that was borrowed possibly from a Slavic language in the early 16th century. The reasons why the original meaning of the word, used for centuries, went through various intermediate stages in the historical process, ultimately taking on negative meanings to refer to someone who is considered to be ignorant, uneducated and vulgar have been studied. The intralingual and non-linguistic impacts on the changes of the meaning of the word varoş have been argued. Hence, this article argues how varoş, which has been neutrally used as an urbanology term in Turkish for more than four hundred years, today defines heterogeneous social classes and a subculture that these represent.
