Leisure Nostalgia and Flourishing: The Mediating Roles of Job Satisfaction, Task Performance, and Career Decision Regret

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine how employees’ psychological well-being is shaped based on the concepts of leisure nostalgia and psychological well-being, by explaining this relationship within the frameworks of the Broaden-and-Build Theory and the Conservation of Resources Theory, and by investigating the mediating roles of job satisfaction, task performance, and career decision regret within a comprehensive model. Data were collected through an online survey from employees across various occupational backgrounds. Using validated Turkish adaptations of established scales, structural equation modeling and mediation analyses were conducted. The results indicated that leisure nostalgia positively influenced job satisfaction and task performance. In turn, job satisfaction and task performance partially mediated the relationship between leisure nostalgia and flourishing. In addition, career decision regret was positioned as a negative psychological mechanism in the model and demonstrated a low-level yet positive and significant mediating role in the relationship between leisure nostalgia and flourishing. Overall, the findings suggest that positive leisure memories play an important role in shaping job satisfaction, task performance, and career-related cognitions. By highlighting this role, the present study extends the literature on employee well-being and suggests that integrating past leisure experiences into one’s professional life may support flourishing in the workplace.
