Evaluation of Generation Z Perceptions Regarding the Concepts of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 in the Context of the Labor Market: A Metaphorical Analysis

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of undergraduate students in Generation Z towards the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 in the context of the labor market. The study was designed in a phenomenological pattern. The sample of the study consists of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations students studying at Yalova University. In addition to their demographic information, students were asked “Industry 4.0 …. like this. Because, …” and “Society 5.0 is like ….” They were asked to complete the sentences because, …”. The analysis of students’ expressions regarding the concepts of “Industry 4.0” and “Society 5.0” was done using the content analysis method. As a result of the research, from the data obtained from the students, the themes of “Diversity, Development, Dream, Need, Convenience, Risk, Savings,” belong to the Industry 4.0 category, and the themes of “Surreal, Infinity, Continuous Improvement and Development, Threat and Laziness” belong to the Society 5.0 category. has been created. While the expressions in the target area and the source area, where the participants’ opinions are included, are more consistent with Industry 4.0 in terms of meaning and justification, their relationship with Society 5.0 is less consistent. It was concluded that while the participants could produce metaphors more easily for Industry 4.0, they produced fewer metaphors for Society 5.0. Thus, it was determined that the participants’ awareness level of Society 5.0 was lower than that of Industry 4.0.
