Bayle, Spinoza ve Panteizm Meselesi

Abstract

Bu makale panteizm meselesini Bayle’in Spinoza’nın cevher monizmine yaptığı eleştiri çerçevesinde değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bayle’in Spinoza’nın bu metafiziksel yaklaşımını yorumu ile yönelttiği eleştirilerin temelinde onun Tanrı ile Tabiat’ı ontolojik olarak özdeşleştirmesinin bazı tutarsızlıklar içerdiği ve Tanrı’ya birbiriyle çelişen nitelikler atfetmek noktasında bir takım saçma sonuçlar doğurduğu iddiası bulunmaktadır. Yine, Bayle’e göre, Spinoza’nın yaklaşımı Tanrı’ya eksiklikler (mükemmellikle bağdaşmayan nitelikler) atfetmek noktasında da İlâhî mükemmellikle ilgili temel sezgilerimize ters düşmektedir. Bayle’in bu eleştirilerini Spinoza’nın metafiziğine dair günümüz tartışmaları bağlamında ele alan makale, Bayle’in yönelttiği itirazların bir kısmı yanıtlanabilse de, Spinoza’nın Tanrı ile âlem arasında temel bir ontolojik yapmamasından dolayı, eleştirisinin temelde geçerliliğini koruduğu sonucuna varmaktadır.

Bayle, Spinoza and the Question of Pantheism

Abstract

The article aims to discuss the question of pantheism by reference to Bayle’s criticism of Spinoza’s substance monism. Essential to Bayle’s interpretation and criticism is the contention that Spinoza’s ontological identification of God and Nature has some inconsistencies and leads to certain absurdities in terms of predicating God of contradictory properties. Bayle also argues that Spinoza’s approach does not make justice to our basic intuitions about God inasmuch as it attributes imperfections to him. Considering Bayle’s criticism within the context of the contemporary debate on Spinoza’s metaphysics, it is argued that although some of the objections raised by Bayle can be sidestepped, his basic criticism seems to endure basically due to Spinoza’s failure to make a substantial distinction between God and the World.
