Oakes, Theism and Pantheism

Abstract

The article aims to give a critical examination of the question as to whether traditional theism entails pantheism by reference some of the theses advanced by Robert Oakes. In doing this, firstly, it gives a brief conceptual analysis of the terms ‘theism’ and ‘pantheism’ and then it provides a description of Oakes’ arguments for the conclusion that traditional theism may entail pantheism. Having examined the arguments put forward for the contention that some traditional theistic teachings may have pantheistic implications together with the objections that can be levelled against such a view, the article maintains that the teachings in question can be defended in a non-pantheistic way. Given that the view that traditional theism entails pantheism depends on some extensionalist ontological intuitions for its validity, it is argued that it might have an implicit pantheistic assumption at the background. Having considered that Oakes’ arguments are both unconvincing and incompatible with the basic tenets of traditional theism, it is concluded that it is not plausible to overcome the difficulties facing traditional theism on the issue of God and the World in a pantheistic or semi-pantheistic manner.

Oakes, Teizm ve Panteizm

Abstract

Makalede geleneksel teizmin panteizmi gerektirip gerektirmediği Robert Oakes’ın bu konuda ileri sürmüş olduğu gerekçeler ışığında ele alınıp, eleştirel açıdan değerlendirilmektedir. Öncelikle ‘teizm’ ve ‘panteizm’ hakkında kısa bir kavramsal çözümleme yapıldıktan sonra Oakes’ın teizmin bazı öğretilerinin panteizmi gerektirebileceği noktasındaki iddiaları üzerinde durulmaktadır. Oakes’ın yaklaşımına yönelik olarak ortaya konulan eleştiriler de dikkate alınarak, geleneksel teizmin panteizmi gerektirebileceğine ilişkin iddiaların başka türlü anlaşılmaya/ yorumlanmaya açık olduğu, bu iddiaları temellendirmek için ileri sürülen gerekçelerin ikna edici olmadığı savunulmaktadır. Tartışmalı olduğu kadar teizmle bağdaşmayan bir takım gerekçelere bağlı olarak savunulan teizmin panteizmi gerektirebileceği çıkarımının temelde kapsayıcı/uzamsal ontolojik sezgilere dayandığı düşünülmektedir. Bu bağlamda ortaya konulan ontolojik yorumlamaların panteist bir anlayışı zımnen içeren ontolojik sezgilerle iç içe olabileceklerine dikkat çekilirken, teizmin öngördüğü Tanrı-âlem ilişkisi önündeki zorlukların panteist veya panteist-vari bir yorumla aşmanın rasyonel bir tercih olmadığı savunulmaktadır. Makale Oakes’ın bu konuda ileri sürdüğü gerekçelerin ikna edici olmadığı kadar geleneksel teizmin temel öğretileriyle de uyumlu olmadığı sonucuna varmaktadır.
