Motivation en Apprentissage d’une Langue EtrangèreMotivation in Foreign Language Learning
Abstract
Motivation is an important factor in determining the success of foreign language learners. Foreign language learning requires learners to be able to use various cognitive skills and strategies as well as an active participation of the individual learners. Assuming that the language learners’ start their learning process with a high or low motivation and this same level of motivation continues throughout the learning process would mean that teachers do not have any role in learners’ motivation. However, the studies conducted on motivation conclude that motivation is not an innate capacity or related to the learners’ personality and that it can vary throughout the learning process. This conclusion implies that various internal and external factors affect this process. In order to eliminate the negative effects of these factors, it is vital to provide a learning environment in which learners would feel themselves secure. A secure environment which creates leaner-leaner and learner-teacher interaction would also lead to intrinsic motivation.
